Boost Click-Through Rates By Improving Meta Descriptions: Here’s How

Whether you’re building out a new website or new website pages for your client, or perhaps uploading some authority-building blog posts to their site, a killer meta description will go a long way toward helping the page perform. Not only will it impact SEO, but it will be the first thing that a would-be visitor sees before clicking on the website.

As one of the best web development outsourcing companies in the UK, we have taken note of what does and doesn’t work. Let’s look at what makes great meta descriptions, well, great.

They’re Unique

It can be tempting to simply repurpose one quality meta description over and over again across your client’s website, but this will rob the site of the chance to diversify its keywords. It may also impact viewers and lead to higher bounce rates…or lower CTRs. When a website displays multiple pages on a search result, but they all have identical meta descriptions, it will be difficult for viewers to trust the site’s authenticity.

They’re Short And Sweet

Not only does keeping the meta description short make it easier for viewers to read and absorb, but search engines actually limit how much can be shown in a result. This means that limiting your description to about 160 characters is best.

They Push A Call To Action (CTA)

A meta description is prime real estate property. Instead of just blandly describing what the page is about, be sure to drive an action with a powerful CTA. Use power verbs and simple “commands” to inspire a click, and it is usually best to place the CTA at the end of the meta description. As a bonus, before driving a CTA, use the first part of the description to sell your client’s unique selling proposition (USP).

They’re Written For Search Engines AND People

While your meta description should certainly include one to two keywords, avoid keyword stuffing. Make your description SEO-friendly while also keeping in mind that a real-life human will read the description and will need to find it interesting, knowledgeable, or tempting enough to click on it.
