How Google Search Console’s Hidden Keywords Can Affect Your Digital Agency’s SEO Strategies

Ahrefs, a company well known for their SEO software suite used for link building, keyword research, rank tracking and more, recently released a study on Google Search Console. More specifically, Patrick Stox detailed the terms Google Search Console doesn’t indicate are generating traffic. At Globital Canada, we are known to digital agencies as SEO resellers working hand in hand with them to ensure they offer the best services to their clients and get the most from the software and tools at their disposal. By understanding tools such as Google Search Console and the limitations and terms that are hidden, digital agencies can be prepared with better, more effective SEO strategies and campaigns for their clients.

What Hidden Data Is The Study Referring To?

The study shows that nearly half of all clicks in Google Search Console yield hidden terms. This means that there is a huge amount of data that Google Search Console users don’t have access to, including many long-tail keywords. This could mean that many digital agencies and marketing professionals don’t have an accurate representation of the keywords they’re getting traffic from.

How Much Google Search Console Data Is Hidden?

According to Ahrefs, the study conducted involved one month’s worth of data across 146 741 websites. The study monitored almost 9 billion clicks in total for its data. During the study, researchers found that as much as 46.08% of clicks in the study could be accounted for by hidden terms. The number of hidden terms per website varied, with some sites’ clicks associated with no hidden terms and others with all of their data hidden. This means that a significant portion of the websites in the study doesn’t have access to accurate data regarding their performance.

Why Does Google Hide Data?

Google explains the discrepancy in data as having to do with user privacy. In order to protect users, the performance report hides data that could contain sensitive or personal information or queries that have only been made a very small number of times. Of course, there could be more to it, including Google Search Console’s having limited resources and being unable to store or share all of the relevant data.

How Does Hidden Google Search Console Data Affect Digital Agencies?

Without accurate information, digital agencies lack the required data to make informed decisions and are unable to form effective SEO and marketing strategies. It’s important for digital agencies to endeavour to find out how much data is missing for both their clients’ websites as well as their own. Fortunately, author Patrick Stox provided a link to a Data Studio report that can be copied in order for digital agencies to be able to check for similar missing data and make the necessary corrections. Digital agencies should recognize this as an opportunity to step up their SEO game; taking advantage can help them get a leg up on the competition and improve their clients’ websites’ performances significantly.
