How Much Does CMS Affect Search Rankings?

When your digital agency has invested time and energy into providing your clients with outstanding SEO services, it makes sense that you would be looking for ways to ensure they consistently rank as high as possible. When trying to improve your clients’ rankings, you will likely analyze every detail to ensure that no external factors are making a negative impact. Many digital agency owners have asked themselves whether a content management system can positively or negatively impact SEO rankings. Google’s John Mueller, Google Search Central, offers answers.

Is A Content Management System A Factor That Affects Search Rankings?

Many content management systems claim to be the best for SEO. This can lead many of us to understand that choosing the wrong CMS can put us at a disadvantage when trying to climb the rankings. But can one content management system significantly improve your clients’ SEO rankings? The short answer is no. Content management systems don’t differ from one another in terms of ranking signals.

Google Doesn’t Pay Much Mind To The Back End Of A Website

SEO is all about the final result that visitors see. No matter the Content Management System your digital agency chooses to use, from Squarespace to WordPress to Wix or any other CMS, the same signals SEO signals can be sent regardless. Mueller explains that Google’s systems aren’t actively searching for one system over another to determine rankings or prefer one over another. As digital marketers know, Google places their user’s experience before any other factor, making the back end of a website low on its list of priorities so long as it serves users well.

Content Management Systems Have Access To The Same Information

If SEO formulas were a closely guarded secret known by a select few, choosing a CMS could be of some significance. This is not the case, however. All CMS developers have access to information about how SEO works, especially since Google doesn’t make it a secret. With open access to this knowledge, most CMS systems in their basic forms won’t make a big difference to SEO as they will essentially be created equally.

Prioritize Creating High-Quality Content

With the knowledge that choosing one Content Management System over another will not make any difference to SEO, your digital agency need not stress over trying to identify and work with the best one. Choose a Content Management System you find user-friendly, easy to work with, and you feel you can use to deliver high-quality websites and content for your clients.

During the video, Mueller explained that DIY webpages could be just as good as those generated by Squarespace, Wix, WordPress, or similar. As long as you deliver content that Google deems beneficial to its users, how you create that content isn’t going to make a difference. The big differences will be seen in the types of plugins the CMS systems have available to make the SEO process easier or offer some insight or automation.
