The spam update page says:

Google uses automated systems to detect spam in search results all the time. Occasionally, they make important improvements to these systems. When that happens, it’s called a spam update, and Google shares these updates publicly.

One example is SpamBrain, Google’s AI system that helps identify and prevent spam. Google updates it regularly to better detect new types of spam.

If a website sees changes in its rankings after a spam update, it should review Google’s spam guidelines and make sure it is following them. Websites that don’t follow these rules may rank lower or may not appear in search results at all. If improvements are made, it can take several months for rankings to recover as Google’s systems reassess the site.

In the case of updates related to link spam, fixing issues may not lead to improved rankings. This is because Google removes the benefit of spammy links, and any advantage those links previously gave cannot be regained.
