Globital UK is a social media reseller working with digital agencies in need of white label social media management. Working with digital agencies on their clients’ social media marketing campaigns, we keep close tabs on any changes, updates or new additions to social media platforms. Instagram has been consistent in releasing updates and new features to make the platform more enjoyable for its users. One of those additions is the Sensitive Content Control feature.
What Is The Sensitive Content Control Feature?
Instagram first launched the Sensitive Content Control feature in July 2021 with the aim of giving Instagram users more control over the type of content they were shown in their Explore sections, specifically from accounts they don’t follow. From their settings menu, users could adjust the amount of sensitive content they were would be exposed to by choosing from three options:
- Standard (the default state)
- Less
- More (only available to users over the age of 18)
In June 2022, Instagram announced that the Sensitive Content Controls would extend further than the explore page across other areas of the platform. Now, users can control the sensitive content they are shown in places, including:
- Search
- Reels
- Accounts You Might Follow
- Hashtags
- In-Feed Recommendations
What Is Considered Sensitive Content?
As yet, there are no clearly defined rules or guidelines as to what is considered to be ‘sensitive content’. Instagram suggests that sensitive content could be considered as any posts on the platform could be potentially upsetting to some people but don’t necessarily break the rules in place for content. Sensitive content could include posts containing sexually suggestive themes or any kind of violence.
Why Is The Sensitive Content Control Feature Necessary?
In the modern world, both the physical and online landscapes, different people have varying views on what they find to be acceptable, triggering or sensitive. By giving users the opportunity to decide for themselves the kind of content they are exposed to gives them the ability to customise their online encounters. Allowing users to shape their own experience shows them that their wellbeing and preferences are taken into account and are a priority.
What Does This Mean For Digital Agencies?
Depending on the types of clients and industries digital agencies represent, users blocking out sensitive content could have an impact on such clients’ reach and engagement. On the one hand, content posted for those clients could be seen by fewer people, resulting in lower view counts. On the other hand, those controls could be a blessing in disguise as the work of filtering out users that will not be interested in the clients’ products or services will already be done. Resources will not be wasted on advertising to users who have no interest in what is on offer.
