Google Responds on Recent Search Ranking Volatility: No Details Provided

January was an especially volatile month for Google Search rankings, which makes it surprising that Google has still not confirmed any ranking update during that time.

When asked about the fluctuations, John Mueller from Google responded by saying, “Unfortunately, I don’t have any insights or updates to share.”

John appeared to suggest that the changes being observed are part of the normal, ongoing changes of the web. As he explained, “The web and search are very dynamic, and it’s expected that things change over time.”

John Mueller was then asked:

“We’ve recently noticed a drop in keyword rankings specifically in the USA region, while other regions look stable. There haven’t been major site changes from our side, so I wanted to ask if there are any recent updates, signals.”

John Mueller replied:

“I understand the desire to learn more about search, but unfortunately I don’t have any insights / updates to share. The web & search is a very dynamic place, it’s expected that things change over time. I’d recommend not just looking at numbers, but digging into the details, if it’s important to you.”

Here are some of the unconfirmed Google search ranking updates I covered in January:

  • Google Search Ranking Volatility Super Heated January 29 & 30
  • Google Search Ranking Volatility Remains Super Heated
  • Google Search Ranking Volatility Heated Again January 21
  • Google Search Ranking Volatility Hits January 15-16
  • Possible Google Search Ranking Volatility Around January 12
  • Google Search Ranking Volatility January 6th With AdSense Earnings Drops

John Mueller’s comments suggest that he is not able to share any details about changes on Google’s side related to rankings or search signals.

As we know, Google does sometimes roll out smaller core-related changes without making public announcements, so it’s possible that’s what we’re seeing here. That said, it’s also possible these changes are unrelated to core updates—it’s difficult to say for certain.

For now, Google has nothing new to share regarding these fluctuations.
