Google finished rolling out its September 2026 spam update on October 8, 2026, after 13 days and 16 hours. This was much longer than any of the three spam updates released earlier in the year.
What Google Said
Google announced the update on September 24, 2026, saying it would apply worldwide and to all languages. Google said the rollout “may take up to two weeks to complete.” On October 8, Google confirmed on its Search Status Dashboard that “the rollout was complete as of October 8, 2026.”
A Longer Rollout Than Usual
The September update stood out because it took much longer than usual. The three earlier spam updates in 2026 each finished in less than three days: March took about 19 hours, June lasted just over two days, and August took about two days and 16 hours. In contrast, the September update used almost the full two-week window Google mentioned.
When Ranking Movement Was Reported
Search Engine Roundtable tracked the update and noted impact periods on September 25–27, September 30, and October 4–6. Some people said the effects were similar to a core update.

What Google’s Documentation Says
According to Google’s spam updates documentation, a spam update is a major improvement to its automated spam-detection systems, such as SpamBrain. If your site’s ranking changes after a spam update, Google recommends reviewing its spam policies. Making the right changes can help, but it may take several months for Google’s systems to notice that your site now follows the rules.
